Seal of the Commander in Chief of the East Indies - 1852

Until the revolt of 1857 leading to the First War of Independence from the British Army, the East India Company was protected by the Forces of the then Queen's Army!

The Commander in Chief was the overall Commander of all men in service reporting to the Queen!

In 1852, His Excellency the most Honorable Sir William Maynard Gomm, Knight Commander of the most Honorable Military Order of the Bath, General of Her Majesty's Forces, Commander in Chief of all the Queen's and Company's Forces in the East Indies, signed and sealed this document of appointment to serve in India.

The above seal belongs to Sir W. M. Gomm.

From my collection!
