As a collector, it's imperative that your Book 'STANDS OUT'
It simply means that there is something Unique about your book! Allow me to explain:
Books are generally printed in multiples of 500,1000, 10k to Millions
So the 'book' per se, is not rare, unless identified as such by authorities like SOLO (Search Oxford Libraries Online), and there are others too.
Your book needs to be searched there - if it's indeed unique!!
The other aspects to be considered are;
Age of the book, year of printing
Size of the book; it's important to know that folio sizes were very few in the 16th to 18th centuries as paper of large sizes were not made
Fonts: Single or Multiple. Multiple makes the book more valuable
How well has the book been preserved: worm holes, silver fish eaten, water stains, mold and mildew damages, brittleness of paper, torn paper and loose binding, browning and powdery paper, and other characteristics are a BIG No No.
First Editions
Previous owners especially famous personalities
Binding: Leather (Full leather or half leather) or cloth!
Printing: Chromolithograph or Ordinary
These are few of the many, that makes your book RARE and UNIQUE
Check if your book has some of the above negatives which greatly diminishes the value!
