Surprises have a way to shaken the regular, but then the fun goes away if you do not recognise it as such.
I have had my share of suprises;
In 1982, as a 22 years old, I chanced upon a wayside vendor, who had a set of porcelain tea set complete. Surprised;
1. Wayside vendor
2. Porcelain Tea Set; complete?!
3. Kettle had a winding music machanism; when wound would play music in accompaniment to relishing tea!
4. Completely enamoured
5. Stupid to have not bought!
To this day, I have and still keep asking myself; why!
Coming back to Winslow Homer,
I found this work in Bangalore at a shop selling Bhel Puri and other savouries. What was it doing there on the wall among other pictures of Gods and Goddesses; beats me!
How long it was there and was it waiting for me?
After I got it for FREE, yes, I did not give the shop owner anything...
I looked up Google and the surprises did not stop... for this very work was advertised in a paper in the US in 1971.
The number on that work was the same as was are the back of this work, including the size of the work, the title of the work and the name of the artist..
Now, here is the newspaper which mentions it;
And the advertisement;
It's been almost 10 years since I have been having it!
But to this day, I have not been able to trace it's journey!
Maybe someday... then I may have my very own Homer Trails like Hemingway Trails!
